Comments Genus Skeletonema was established by Greville (1865) for a single species, S. barbadense. Several species of Skeletonema have since then been described, both fossil and living. Sims (1994) maintains the living Skeletonema species (such as S. costatum) in the genus Skeletonema and places the fossil ones in a new genus Skeletonemopsis. The name Skeletonemopsis, introduced by Sims 1994 in anticipation of acceptance of the proposal to conserve Skeletonema with a conserved type (S. costatum), was superfluous when proposed and hence illegitimate. The proposals to conserve Skeletonema Greville 1865 with a conserved type (S. costatum), and Skeletonemopsis Sims 1994 (T: S. barbadense) (see Ross, Sims & Gallagher, Taxon, 45/2, 315-316. 1996) are recommended by the Committee on Algae and will probably be accepted by the next Botanical Congress in 1999 (P. Compère, pers. com., 1998).
