Comments Typified with type of replaced name. The name Amphitrite is introduced in Cleve 1878, p. 19 (ref. 000221), but invalidly published, in a list of diatoms from Barbados as "Amphitrite (Amphiprora Greg.) complexa (Greg.) Diat. of Clyde pl. 4, fig. 62". No description, illustration, or explanation was given by Cleve. Kuntze 1891, p. 882 (ref. 001330) proposed to use Amphitrite Cleve as a substitute name for Auricula Castracane 1873, non Auricula Battarra 1755. Kuntze included in the genus Amphitrite: Amphitrite complexa Cleve (Greg.), Amphitrite japonica (Brun), mucronata [H.L.Sm.] (Perag.), ostrea (Temp. & Brun) OK and Auricula amphitritis Cast. = Amphitrite castracanei OK. The name Amphitrite became superfluous in 1956 (see ICBN 1956) when Auricula Castracane 1873 was conserved vs. Auricula Hill 1756 and Auricula Battarra ex O. Kuntze 1891. Synonym: Auricula Castracane 1873.
