Comments In his discussion about genus Amphiprora Cleve 1891 created the genus Tropidoneis to group in a same genus 4 groups: Plagiotropis Pfitzer, Amphoropsis Grunow in Van Heurck, Orthotropis Cleve (forms of the type of Amphiprora maxima) and Apteroe (forms of the type of Amphiprora membranacea). In his discussion about genus Amphiprora Cleve 1891 created genus Tropidoneis to unite 4 groups in the same genus: Plagiotropis Pfitzer, Amphoropsis Grunow in Van Heurck, Orthotropis Cleve (forms of the type of Amphiprora maxima) and Apteroe (forms of the type of Amphiprora membranacea). No type is designated in Cleve 1891. It is somewhat difficult to determine which species were originally included by Cleve (incidentally, he did not form any binomials with Tropidoneis); we believe that the following species were undoubtedly included: Amphiprora maxima, Amphiprora membranacea, Amphiprora vitrea, Amphoropsis recta, Amphoropsis conserta. Cleve 1891 (ref. 000228), p. 52, has indicated that Amphiprora vitrea Smith 1853 is synonymous with Plagiotropis baltica Pfitzer 1871. In Cleve (1894) (ref. 000232), there is a long description/discussion about the genus Tropidoneis Cleve 1891, and description of 24 Tropidoneis species. In this 1894 paper, he considers only 3 groups within genus Tropidoneis: Orthotropis, Plagiotropis, and Amphoropsis (he chosed to place A. membranacea in the Orthotropis group). No type is designated in Cleve 1894 (ref. 000232). Tropidoneis Cleve 1891 is a later taxonomic synonym of Plagiotropis Pfitzer 1871 which is a later homonym of Plagiotropis F.v. Müller 1857.
