Comments | Name rejected vs. Pleurosigma W. Smith 1852 (nom. cons., taxonomic synonym) (see ICBN 1956, p. 201, ref. 006916). Comments: Not verified by us (information from Farr et al. 1979). Name rejected vs. Pleurosigma W. Smith 1852 (nom. cons., taxonomic synonym). SVL's entry (" Endosigma Brébisson herb. et in litt. (according to Rabenhorst 1864, p. 266, ref. 000775)") refers to the first use of this name for a binomial. The name Endosigma Brébisson is introduced in Rabenhorst, p. 266, for a subgroup of Schizonema Agardh. Two species are given Sch. eximium Thwaites 1848 (also given as Endosigma eximium Breb. herb. et in litt.), and Sch. subflexile (Colletonema subflexile Greg.) Rab. No type is designated. The type is given as E. eximium at the time of rejection (see ICBN 1956, p. 201, ref. 006916), and also in the Montreal, Edinburgh and Seattle codes, however the type is given as "not designated" in the Leningrad and the subsequent Codes. P. Silva (pers. com. to EF, 1998) wrote: "Endosigma Brébisson 1848 is somewhat problematic inasmuch as the generic protologue mentioned neither species nor specimens. The first binomial under this generic name seems to be E. eximium 'Bréb. in Herb. and litt.', published by Rabenhorst (Fl. Eur. Alg. 1:266. 1864) as a synonym of Schizonema eximium Thwaites 1848. The first use of this binomial as an accepted name was by Van Heurck (Syn. Diatom. Belgique: pl. 21: fig. 2, 1880), who wrote 'Endosigma eximium Bréb. (Schizonema eximium Thwaites)'. Thus, there is circumstantial evidence that Schizonema eximium Thwaites was included in the generic protologue. In the Paris Code the type is cited as E. eximium (Thwaites) Juhl.-Dannf. (1882), but in fact it should be accredited to (Thwaites) Van Heurck (1880). I am happy to leave the type as 'non designatus', but if Van Heurck's action is considered a lectotypification the entry would read: Endosigma Bréb. in Orbigny, Dict. Univ. Hist. Nat. 11: 418, 419. Typus (vide Van Heurck, Syn. Diatom. Belgique: t. 21, f.2, 1880): E. eximium (Thwaites) Van Heurck (Schizonema eximium Thwaites)". |
