Comments Although listed in SVL catalogue, this genus does not belong to the diatoms, Farr et al. 1979 indicate that the genus belongs to the Dinophyceae. Two species are originally included: D. michaelis and D. acuta, no type is designated. See Ehrenberg 1840 (ref. 000290) where Dinophysis was also introduced as a new genus, p. 44. See also Ehrenberg 1841 (ref. 000953) p. 124 (ref. 000290 and 000953 are identical except for pagination)
