Comments Three species originally included: B. pulchella (= Conferva biddulphiana - Diatoma biddulphianum Ag.), B. obliquata (= Conferva obliquata) and B. stipitata (= Conferva stipitata), no generitype designated. Farr et al. 1979 indicate that the type was designated by Kützing 1833, p. 567, 579 (ref. 000594); Kützing however did not make such a designation, he merely listed B. pulchella along with a new species B. vesiculosa Kütz. (p. 82 of reprint) while transferring Conferva obliquata to genus Isthmia (p. 51 of reprint) and treating Conferva stipitata as a synonym of Achnanthes longipes Ag. (p. 48 of reprint), thus leaving only one of the original species of Gray (B. pulchella) in genus Biddulphia. Kützing's action does not constitute lectotypification which is effected by Boyer 1927.
