POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER at the California Academy of Sciences, San Francisco (1996-97)

- Assembling a computerized database of verified diatom names. Verifying the accuracy of the taxonomic information for the estimated 70,000 entries, using the original publications.
- Compiling a catalogue of verified diatom genera names.

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER at the California Academy of Sciences, San Francisco (1993-94)

- Studied diatoms from deep sea cores of Ocean Drilling Program Leg 146 (Oregon and California). Used diatom biostratigraphy to identify unconformities and intervals of reversed stratigraphy that were crucial in the structural interpretation of the Cascadia margin. Interpreted fluctuations of diatom assemblages and contributed to reconstruction of paleoenvironments in the Santa Barbara Basin during the late Quaternary. Published results in 3 research papers.

VISITING SCIENTIST (volunteer) at the United States Geological Survey, Menlo Park. (1988-93) Worked on:

- Taxonomy and biostratigraphy of the Neogene, Paleogene and Cretaceous diatom assemblages from ODP Leg 121, tropical Indian Ocean (1988-1990).
- Miocene non-marine diatoms from northern Peru, taxonomy and biostratigraphy (1988-1991).
- Late Miocene (Messinian) diatoms from northern Italy (1988- 1989) and Sicily (1990-1991), taxonomy, biostratigraphy, paleoecology.

- Provided diatom biostratigraphical analyses.

SHIP-BOARD PALEONTOLOGIST (diatom biostratigraphy) Ocean Drilling Program Leg 121 to Broken Ridge and Ninetyeast Ridge, eastern tropical Indian Ocean. (1988)

- Collected, processed and analyzed diatoms in sediments onboard the ship in order to provide age control during drilling operations.
- Analyzed the material in more detail onshore and published 3 research papers on diatom taxonomy and biostratigraphy.

RESEARCH ASSISTANT, Ecole Normale Supé, Fontenay- aux-Roses, France (Supervisor: Dr. F. Gasse). (1983- 86)

- Studied Neogene and Quaternary marine and freshwater diatoms from Africa. Established a freshwater diatom biochronology from diatom studies of African Neogene and Quaternary sedimentary profiles. Described and interpreted marine diatom assemblages from western African cores. Published results in my Ph.D. dissertation.

VISITING SCIENTIST, Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory of Columbia University, Palisades, New York (October 1984 to March 1985). (1984-85)

- Studied Neogene diatoms from southeastern Atlantic (DSDP Sites 362 and 366) with Dr. Lloyd H. Burckle. Approached the problem of correlation between the continent and the ocean by the study of displaced freshwater diatoms in marine cores. Published results in my Ph.D. dissertation.
