Synonyms

=  Chrysopa madegassa  Navás,1921

=  Chrysopa ictericus  Esben-Petersen, 1927

=  Chrysopa crassinervis  Esben-Petersen, 1927

The synonymies are those of Hölzel & Ohm (1992).

Diagnosis

Males of this species are immediately recognizable among Malagasy chrysopids because of the swollen radial sector veins.  The elements of the male genitalia include a T-shaped gonapsis, and the tignum is absent.

Type Depository

of A. eurydera is MNHN, Paris.

of C. madegassa is unknown.

of C. ictericus and C. crassinervis are Universitetets Zoologiska Museum, Kobenhavn, Denmark.

Type Locality

of A. eurydera is Madagascar: mahabo, 28 April 1899, G. Grandidier, 1 female.

of C. madegassa is unknown.

of C. ictericus and C. crassinervis are Seychelles Islands, Mahe, 1 male and 1 female.

Geographical Distribution

The distribution map for this species in Hölzel and Ohm (1992) indicates a distribution in KENYA, CONGO, MOZAMBIQUE, SOUTH AFRICA, SEYCHELLES, ALDABRA ISLAND, REUNION ISLAND, MAURITIUS, and MADAGASCAR. Ohm and Hölzel (1998) also report this species from SENEGAL, SOMALIA, and the COMORO ISLANDS.  Additional specimens have been collected on SÃ0 TOME ISLAND off the west coast of Africa.  Within Madagascar records are from the north, south, and western parts of the country.

Top

Temporal Distribution

November to April and June to July.

Elevation

40 to 1025 m.

Remarks

This is the only species in Madagascar that has a swollen forewing radial sector (males only). There is an illustration of this (under the name madegassa) in Brooks and Barnard (1990).  I have seen no illustrations of the male genitalia.
