Diagnosis

This is the only species of Apochrysinae found in Madagascar, so that characters of the subfamily will readily distinguish this species.  They are large, broad-winged species with no subcostal crossveins, no intramedian cell (im) and pseudomedia (Psm) and pseudocubitus (Pscu) merges into the outer gradate series of crossveins.  There are one or more dark spots along the inner gradate series.

of Anapochrysa africana is TANZANIA: Eastern Usambara Mountains, Kiumba, Amani, 1 female.

Geographical Distribution

Hölzel and Ohm (1992; Penny 2005) indicate that this species is found in Tanzania, Fernando Poo Island [Bioko], São Tome, South Africa, Comoro Islands and Madagascar. Within Madagascar there is a single female known from Antananarivo: Tananarive, February 1950, R. Paulian (Fraser, 1951).

Specimens from Sao Tome Island were collected  at about 1300 m. 

Remarks

There are excellent drawings of wings and male and female genitalia in Tjeder (1966).
