Gaboon Viper, Bitis gabonica

Family Viperidae. B. gabonica is largest viper in Africa attaining weights of over 20 kg and possessing fangs up to 2 1/4 "long; like B. nasicornis, coloration is extremely cryptic, rendering it difficult to see on forest floor. A single specimen probably caught below and outside the BINP boundaries is contained in the Carnegie Museum collections.

Size: largest African viper; to 1.8 m, TL.

Habitat: forest and forest fringes.

Range: East and Central Africa, west to Nigeria, south to KwaZulu\Natal.
