Frogs

Back to main Checklist Guin Wogan compiled this checklist relying primarily on Darrel R. Frost's Amphibian Species of the World: An Online Reference (2000 and 2001 editions). Pending publication, the list does not yet include at least six species previously unknown to occur in Myanmar or a possible 36 species new to science.

Column Status indicates whether this species has been verified by the Project (V) or has been reported in the literature (lit).

1. Bufo burmanus was recently synonomyzed with Bufo pageoti by Dubois and Ohler (1999). They do note that there are some variations between the type specimens of these two species. Until further evidence is available, we retain the name B. burmanus in reference to the Myanmar populations.

2. Dubois has recommended a number of subgenera for Asian Rana. There has been a recent trend to elevate these subgenera to full generic status. While some of these groups do appear to be monophyletic, several are characterized inadequately. The subgeneric groups for the Burmese Rana are: Hoplobatrachus - rugulosa; Ingerana - tenasserimensis; Fejervarya -altilabris, limnocharis; Limnonectes - blythii, doriae, hascheana, kuhlii, laticeps, limborgi, macrodon, macrognathus; Paa - arnoldi, feae, yunnanensis. The above genera have not yet been updated in the CAS collection or collection database. Rana should be used for searches within the CAS database.
