Drs. Walter Brown and Angel Alcala began their collaboration in 1954, shortly after Brown arrived in the Philippines as a Fulbright Visiting Professor at Silliman University. Brown, seeing potential in the young and enthusiastic Alcala, took him under his wing by encouraging his innate love of herpetology and facilitating his education at Stanford University.

Alcala led the field expeditions while assisting Brown in his ecology and systematics research. Together they identified 17 new species of reptiles and 19 species of amphibians. Their research culminated in over 100 publications on the herpetofauna of the Philippines and a collection of about 24,000 specimens, most of which are housed at the California Academy of Sciences.

In 2002, Walter Brown passed away, but his legacy lives on through his incredible contribution to our knowledge of the Philippine herpetofauna. Alcala, continues to conduct research, publish, and educate with a focus on conservation as the Director of the Angelo King Center for Research and Environmental Management at Silliman University.
