THE FRESHWATER FISHES OF THE INDIAN REGION by Dr. K.C. Jayaram. An up-to-date compendium of all information available up to 1997 of the freshwater fish fauna of this region. The classification adopted is generally after Nelson's Fishes of the World (1994), Howes (1991) with inputs from Eschmeyer's Genera of Fishes (1990). For Cyprinine genera the order of arrangement proposed by Rainboth (1991) has been adhered to. In respect of nemacheilines the arrangement proposed by Banarescu and Nalbant (1995), Kottelat (1990) have been followed. The Indian region as conceived here includes India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal and Sri Lanka within their political boundaries. Afghanistan and other border areas are excluded. All primary freshwater fishes are listed and many secondary and peripheral species are included. A uniform pattern of citation is adopted. Brief salient feature of all the taxa up to orders are given. Descriptive details in respect of families and genera are provided. Synonymies include the latest valid name, first reference, type-designations and more important pertinent references to that taxa. Species are not described, but listed alphabetically with their known range of distribution. Genera are arranged according to their known phylogenetic and intergeneric affinities. Keys and simple drawings are given. Synonyms, notes on species, genera, nomenclatural clarifications are given as foot-notes. For many genera the more common species are illustrated as plate figs. A total of 270 genera with 847 species under 72 families, 16 orders, a glossary of 218 technical terms, a bibliography of 625 references, 241 figs and 18 plates are in the book. Published by M/S Narendra Publishing House, 1417 Kishen Dutt Street, Maliwara, Delhi 110 006 INDIA (Fax 211 3355). Pre-publication orders and inquiries may be placed with them. Probable release date: Jan. 1999. Author's address: Dr. K.C. Jayaram, Pitambar Pant National Environment Fellow, Madras Science Foundation, "Padmaja", 22 III Main Road, Officers colony, Adambakkam, Chennai, 600 088 INDIA.

MARINE FISHES AND FISH NAMES OF THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. Repertorio ictionímico de la República Dominicana. Fascículo III: Labridae-Pomadasyidae, by Lysanne Coupal, Édith Bédard, Carmen Peguero, Ignacio Soldevila Durante, and collaborators Max Arturo Jiménez Sabater and Sergio Valdés. (1998, 519 pp). This volume introduces 62 species, representing 18 families from Labridae to Pomadasyidae, and includes keys of identification, description, nomenclature, data on ecology, ethology, geographical distribution, and first hand information on local production, consumption and popular uses in the Dominican Republic. Each species is illustrated by drawings and colour photos. The linguistic information provided on each species is the result of a systematical investigation in 47 selected fishing localities, with a total of 295 active fishermen. It consists of a list of vernacular names in use in each locality, a decreasing occurence frequency list, geolinguistic distribution maps and charts, and quotations by the fishermen. Common names, used in several countries with historical or ecological ties with the Dominican Republic are also included. Multilingual indexes complete the book written in Spanish. This work was conceived and realized for 2 purposes: 1. to complete FAO's catalogue in Area 31, as it was expressly suggested in Fisher (1978:4), and 2. to promote the Dominican fishing industry through better knowledge of fishing resources and variety. PHYLOGENY AND CLASSIFICATION OF NEOTROPICAL FISHES. We are pleased to announce the publication of this work edited by L.R. Malabarba, R.E. Reis, R.P. Vari, Z.M.S. Lucena, and C.A.S. Lucena. The volume includes many of the contributions presented at the International Symposium on Phylogeny and Classification of Neotropical Fishes, held in Porto Alegre, Brazil, in July 1997. The book consists of 29 chapters dealing with the systematics, biogeography, and paleontology of most of the groups of Neotropical freshwater fishes. The first chapters provide overviews of the geological and paleontological evidence about the origin and evolution of the diversity of Neotropical fishes (Lundberg et al., Lundberg, M.C. Malabarba, and Gayet & Meunier). The remaining contributions focus on the phylogeny and diversity of the major groups of Recent Neotropical fishes. Overviews are presented for the Characiformes (Vari), Characidae (Weitzman & Malabarba), Siluriformes (de Pinna), Gymnotiformes (Campos-da-Paz & Albert), Atherinopsidae (Dyer), Cyprinodontiformes (Costa), and Cichlidae (Kullander). These papers, to varying degrees, incorporate new phylogenetic information on the reviewed taxa, sometimes integrating previously reported and new evidence to develop hypotheses of higher level relationships. Supplementing the overview papers are a series of contributions addressing phylogenetic questions ranging from the subgeneric to subordinal level in the Characiformes (Buckup, Langeani, Weitzman & Menezes, Malabarba, Vari & Harold, and Lucena & Menezes), Siluriformes (Soares-Porto, Reis, Montoya-Burgos et al., and Schaefer), Gymnotiformes (Albert &Campos-da-Paz and Alves-Gomes), Atherinomorpha (Ghedotti), and Perciformes (Farias et al. and Wimberger et al.). The value of sperm ultrastructure in assessing the relationships among groups of inseminating characids is demonstrated by Burns et al., and the utility of cytogenetic markers in providing information on the phylogenetic relationships among S. American fishes is discussed by Almeida-Toledo. Price is US$ 62.00 or R$ 76,00 (plus US$/R$ 6.00 for surface shipping or US$/R$ 22,00 for airmail). For orders, write to Edipucrs, Av. Ipiranga 6681, P.O.Box. 1429, 90619-900 Porto Alegre, Brazil, or email to edipucrs@music.pucrs.br (http://www.pucrs.br/edipucrs).

SEAHORSES: AN IDENTIFICATION GUIDE TO THE WORLD'S SPECIES AND THEIR CONSERVATION. Lourie, S.A., A.C.J. Vincent and H.J. Hall. 224 pp. ISBN 0 9534693 0 1. Project Seahorse. In press. Available through NATURAL HISTORY BOOK SERVICE LTD, 2-3 Wills Road, Totnes, Devon, TQ9 5XN, U.K. Tel +44 (1803) 865 913; Fax +44 (1803) 865 280; Email nhbs@nhbs.co.uk; Internet http://www.nhbs.co.uk - Based on original morphometric and genetic research, this book is the only currently available comprehensive treatment of seahorse species world-wide, and the first attempt at a global revision of the genus. Detailed background information introduces the fascinating biology of these unusual fishes, the threats that they face and conservation efforts that are underway. Available evidence suggests that population numbers in the wild are declining, yet we do not even know how many seahorse species there are. This book describes the group in clear, non-technical language with full illustrations, photographs, species distributions and a pictorial key. It is aimed at conservationists, researchers, museum curators, fishers, trade and Customs officials, aquarists and interested lay-people alike. Proceeds from the sale of the book will go to Project Seahorse's conservation initiatives for seahorses, their relatives and their habitats around the world.
