Syntypes: ZMB 8806 (1, right skin) Malabar, 32057 (1, right skin) Malabar. Type catalog: Paepke 1999:106 [ref. 24282]. Name probably based on syn- (together) and [o]ura (tail), to be treated as an adjective. Composite species; name based in part on Gymnotus notopterus Pallas 1769 from Indonesia, in part on Tinca marina of Bontius in Piso 1658 [ref. 30353], and on syntype material from Tranquebar, India; restricted to Indian populations by LavouĂ© et al. 2020:451 [ref. 37625]. •Synonym of Notopterus notopterus (Pallas 1769) -- (Roberts 1992:364 [ref. 20012], Chen 2002:288 [ref. 26587] as synyira, Kottelat 2013:32 [ref. 32989]). •Valid as Notopterus synurus (Bloch & Schneider 1801) -- (Lavoué et al. 2020:451 [ref. 37625]). Current status: Valid as Notopterus synurus (Bloch & Schneider 1801). Notopteridae: Notopterinae. Distribution: South Asia: Pakistan, India, Nepal and Bangladesh. Habitat: freshwater, brackish.
