Composite species; name based in part on Gymnotus notopterus Pallas 1769 from Indonesia, in part on Tinca marina of Bontius in Piso 1658 [ref. 30353], and on syntype material from Tranquebar, India; restricted to Indian populations by Lavoué et al. 2020:451 [ref. 37625]. •Synonym of Notopterus notopterus (Pallas 1769) -- (Roberts 1992:364 [ref. 20012], Chen 2002:288 [ref. 26587] as synyira, Kottelat 2013:32 [ref. 32989]). •Valid as Notopterus synurus (Bloch & Schneider 1801) -- (Lavoué et al. 2020:451 [ref. 37625]).
