Syntypes: (several localities) SAIAB [formerly RUSI] 67 (1). Also described as new in Smith 1956:5, Pl. 41 (fig. D) as Xanothon bipallidus. Parenti & Randall 2000:53 [ref. 24943] treated both species as independent, but that is not true. Dates are very close in time, and further research may be needed. A holotype is established for the description as Xanothon bipallidus but was not located in 1956; no type was established in ref. 12527; the holotype in ref. 4104 would make the best lectotype if the description above was first. Kottelat (2013) indicates that ref. 4104 appeared earlier. •Synonym of Chlorurus sordidus (Forsskål 1775) -- (Randall 2005:451 [ref. 28239], Kottelat 2013:380 [ref. 32989], Fricke et al. 2018:296 [ref. 35805], Randall 2022:273 [ref. 39936]).
