Holotype (unique): SAM 13817. •Synonym of Apogon apogonoides (Bleeker 1856) -- (Heemstra in Smith & Heemstra 1995:x [ref. 21953]). •Valid as Apogon enigmaticus (Smith 1961) -- (Gon 1986:549 [ref. 5657], T. Fraser pers. com. 9/2000, Manilo & Bogorodsky 2003:S105 [ref. 27377]). •Valid as Apogonichthyoides enigmaicus Smith 1961 -- (Fraser & Allen 2010:44 [ref. 30717], Fraser & Allen 2011:68 [ref. 31605], Mabuchi et al. 2014:202 [ref. 33426], Psomadakis et al. 2015:206 [ref. 34104], Kuiter & Kozawa 2019:160 [ref. 36965], Fraser et al. 2022:210 [ref. 39752], Moazzam & Osmany 2023:64 [ref. 40689]). Current status: Valid as Apogonichthyoides enigmaticus Smith 1961. Apogonidae: Apogoninae. Distribution: Red Sea; western Indian Ocean: KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa) and East Africa to Oman and Pakistan. Habitat: marine.
