anchovia, Sardinella Valenciennes [A.] in Cuvier & Valenciennes 1847:269 [Histoire naturelle des poissons v. 20; ref. 1012] Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Lectotype: MNHN 0000-3746. Paralectotypes: MNHN 0000-3380 (1), 0000-3747 (1), 0000-5484 (2). Type catalog: Bertin 1940:285 [ref. 293], Whitehead & Bauchot 1986:25-26 [ref. 9739]. Lectotype regarded as established by Longley & Hildebrand 1941:7 [ref. 18452] with the statement, "The first fish in table 1, first mentioned by Valenciennes' description of S. anchovia, may be regarded as the type of that species. The other four are S. brasiliensis (Steindachner)." •Synonym of Sardinella aurita Valenciennes 1847 -- (Whitehead 1985:93 [ref. 5141], Smith-Vaniz et al. 1999:146 [ref. 25013], Schmitter-Soto et al. 2000:150 [ref. 27754], Munroe & Nizinski 2003:825 [ref. 26997]). Current status: Synonym of Sardinella aurita Valenciennes 1847. Dorosomatidae. Habitat: brackish, marine.
