Lectotype: BMNH 1887.11.11.40. Paralectotypes: BMNH 1887.11.11.37 (1, dry). Lectotype selected by Randall & Heemstra 1991:138, 140 [ref. 19601] but their catalog number on p. 138 [1887.11.11.37] is not in agreement with specimens on p. 140. •Synonym of Epinephelus epistictus (Temminck & Schlegel 1843) -- (Randall & Heemstra 1991:137 [ref. 19601], Heemstra & Randall 1993:143 [ref. 21042], Randall 1995:130 [ref. 22896], Heemstra & Randall 1999:2496 [ref. 24815], Parenti & Randall 2020:66 [ref. 37354], Heemstra 2022:54 [ref. 39742]). Current status: Synonym of Epinephelus epistictus (Temminck & Schlegel 1843). Epinephelidae. Habitat: marine.
