Earliest available publication apparently by Fowler 1975:73 [ref. 9331], where citation to Hoedeman is given and a type (as a subspecies) is designated. Author would be Fowler and date 1975. •Treated as a synonym of Alestes Müller & Troschel 1844 -- (Paugy 1984:140 [ref. 6183]). Current status: Synonym of Alestes Müller & Troschel 1844. Alestidae.

Apparently dates to Hoedeman 1956 as above. •Synonym of Bathyaethiops Fowler 1949 -- (Paugy 1984:163 [ref. 6183]). •Synonym of Brachyalestes Günther 1864. Alestopetersiini Hoedeman [J. J.] 1951:5 Appeared in key as "...genus Alestopetersiini (new name)," but it is clear from key that this was intended as a new subtribe and not a new genus. See also Hoedeman 1956: 558 [ref. 6184] as subtribe. Alestidae.

Alestopetersius Hoedeman [J. J.] 1951:6 (in key) Masc. Petersius hilgendorfi Boulenger 1899. Type by monotypy. Not preoccupied by Clupeacharax Pearson 1924 in fishes; Clupeopetersius Pellegrin 1928 apparently is an unneeded replacement. •Valid as Clupeocharax Pellegrin 1926 -- (Géry 1977:50 [ref. 1597], Paugy 1984:167 [ref. 6183], Poll & Gosse 1995:141 [ref. 24781], Mirande 2009:6 [ref. 30267] in Alestidae, Mirande 2010:474 [ref. 31006]). Hemigrammalestes Pellegrin [J.] 1926:158 Masc. Micralestes urotaenia Boulenger 1909. Type by subsequent designation. Type apparently designated first by Burton in Zoological record for 1926, not M. interruptus as designated by Myers 1929. •Synonym of Phenacogrammus Eigenmann 1907. Current status: Synonym of Phenacogrammus Eigenmann 1907. Alestidae.

Hemigrammopetersius Pellegrin [J.] 1926:158 Masc. Petersius pulcher Boulenger 1909. Type by subsequent designation. Type designated by Burton in Zoological Record for 1926. •Valid as Hemigrammopetersius Pellegrin 1926 -- (Géry 1977:38 [ref. 1597], Paugy 1984:168 [ref. 6183], Poll & Gosse 1995:147 [ref. 24781], Mirande 2009:6 [ref. 30267] in Alestidae, Mirande 2010:474 [ref. 31006]). •Synonym of Phenacogrammus Eigenmann 1907 -- (Géry 1995:46 [ref. 22057] by placement of type species). Hydrocionichthys Travassos [H.] 1952:142 Masc. Hydrocynus forskahlii Cuvier 1819. Type by original designation (also monotypic). See account of Hydrocynus. Travassos regarded Eigenman 1810 as establishing the type of Hydrocyon as H. lucius, so Travassos described a new genus for H. forskahlii Cuvier 1819. •Synonym of Hydrocynus Cuvier 1816 -- (Paugy 1984:169 [ref. 6183]) but with type for both genera as forskahlii. Current status: Synonym of Hydrocynus Cuvier 1816. Alestidae.

Hydrocynus (subgenus of Salmo) Cuvier [G.] 1816:167 Masc. Hydrocynus lucius Cuvier 1816. Type by subsequent designation. Needs research on type species and possible action by the ICZN. Type often given as Hydrocyon forskahlii Cuvier 1819, but that was not an originally included species in 1816. Type apparently designated first by Eigenmann 1910:446 [ref. 1224] as lucius (see Travassos 1951 [ref. 4450]), and not by Agassiz in Spix & Agassiz 1829:76 [ref. 13] or by Cuvier 1819 [ref. 1017]. Hydrocion Duméril 1856 and Hydrocinus Boulenger (ex Cuvier) 1909 are unjustified emendations or incorrect subsequent spellings. Type apparently not H. forskahlii Cuvier 1819. Hydrocionichthys Travassos 1952 is an objective synonym if the type of Hydrocynus is forskahlii. But the type species, if correctly H. lucius, is a South American species placed by current authors in the genus Boulengerella in a different family. An African type species for Hydrocynus, such as forskahlii, would stabilize current usage. See Brewster 1986:164 [ref. 8104]. •Valid as an African genus Hydrocynus Cuvier 1816 -- (Géry 1977:54 [ref. 1597], Paugy 1984:169 [ref. 6183], Brewster 1986:163 [ref. 8104], Paugy & Guégan 1989:64 [ref. 26479] with date as 1819, Lévêque et al. 1989:116 [ref. 26480], Paugy & Bénech 1989:300 [ref. 26478], Paugy in Lévêque et al. 1990:198 [ref. 21589], Paugy et al. 1990:337 [ref. 26477], Poll & Gosse 1995:141 [ref. 24781], Seegers 1996:165 [ref. 23725], Dankwa et al. 1999:18 [ref. 28023], Zanata & Vari 2005;117 [ref. 28816], Ibala Zamba et al. 2007:1213 [ref. 29470], Paugy & Schaefer 2007:353 [ref. 30022], Mirande 2009:6 [ref. 30267] in Alestidae, Mirande 2010:474 [ref. 31006], Oliveira et al. 2011:10 [ref. 31685], Marshall 2011:138 [ref. 31755], Arroyave & Stiassny 2011:394 [ref. 34108]). Current status: Valid as Hydrocynus Cuvier 1816. Alestidae.

Hydrocyon Cuvier [G.] 1819:353 Masc. Not intended as new; same as Hydrocynus, and can be regarded as an incorrect subsequent spelling; see account of Hydocynus Cuvier 1816. •In the synonymy of Hydrocynus Cuvier 1816. Current status: Synonym of Hydrocynus Cuvier 1816. Alestidae.

Ladigesia Géry [J.] 1968:78 Fem. Ladigesia roloffi Géry 1968.
