Apistes Cuvier [G.] in Cuvier & Valenciennes 1829:391 Masc. Appeared first in Cuvier (Mar.) 1829:167 [ref. 995] as "Les Apistes"; Ap. alatus in footnote (p. 167) apparently not sufficient for latinization as Apistes or Apistus; latinized by Cuvier in Cuvier & Valenciennes (Nov. 1829) as Apistus, with Apistes as above a French vernacular name. •In the synonymy of Apistus Cuvier 1829 -- (Mandrytsa 2001:258 [ref. 25636]). Apistidae.

Apistops Ogilby [J. D.] 1911:36, 54 Masc. Apistus caloundra De Vis 1886. Apistus Cuvier [G.] in Cuvier & Valenciennes 1829:391 Masc. Apistus alatus Cuvier 1829. Type by subsequent designation. Type designated by Bleeker 1876:4 [ref. 12248] and Bleeker 1876:296 [ref. 450]. See also Apistes. •Valid as Apistus Cuvier 1829 -- (Shimizu in Masuda et al. 1984:317 [ref. 6441], Washington et al. 1984:440 [ref. 13660], Eschmeyer 1986:464 [ref. 5652], Lindberg & Krasyukova 1987:93 [ref. 15964], Poss 1999:2296 [ref. 24796], Mandrytsa 2001:258 [ref. 25636], Allen et al. 2006:894 [ref. 29066], Prokofiev 2008:301 [ref. 29592], Motomura 2009:63 [ref. 30463], Fricke et al. 2018:137 [ref. 35805], Golani & Fricke 2018:56 [ref. 36273]). Hypodytes Gistel [J.] 1848:VIII Masc. Apistus alatus Cuvier 1829. Type by being a replacement name. Apparently technically is a replacement for Apistes Cuvier. Hypodytes was proposed by Gistel as a replacement for "Aspistes Quoy, Astrol., Fisch.", but Apistus Cuvier was used by Quoy & Gaimard, not the earlier non-latinized "Apistes" Cuvier 1829. Should be treated as an objective synonym of Apistus Cuvier 1829. Treated as valid as Hypodytes Gistel 1848 -- (Nakabo in Masuda et al. 1984:319 [ref. 6441], Lindberg & Krasyukova 1987:160 [ref. 15964], Paxton et al. 1989:442 [ref. 12442] with wrong authorship). •Should be treated as an objective synonym of Apistus Cuvier 1829. •Treated as valid as Hypodytes Gistel 1848 -- (Nakabo in Masuda et al. 1984:319 [ref. 6441], Lindberg & Krasyukova 1987:165 [ref. 15964], Paxton et al. 1989:442 [ref. 12442] with wrong authorship). •Synonym of Apistus Cuvier 1829 -- (Mandrytsa 2001:258 [ref. 25636]). Current status: Synonym of Apistus Cuvier 1829. Apistidae.

An overlooked name, apparently based on a species of Apistus. •Apparently a synonym of Apistus Cuvier 1829. Current status: Synonym of Apistus Cuvier 1829. Apistidae.

Polemius Kaup [J. J.] 1858:333 Masc. Apistus alatus Cuvier 1829. Type by monotypy. Objectively invalid; preoccupied by Polemius Leconte 1851 in Coleoptera. •In the synonymy of Apistus Cuvier 1829 -- (Lindberg & Krasyukova 1987:93 [ref. 15964], Mandrytsa 2001:258 [ref. 25636]). Prosopodasys Cantor [T. E.] 1849:1026 [44] Fem. Apistus alatus Cuvier 1829. Type by being a replacement name. Unneeded replacement for Apistus Cuvier 1829, not preoccupied by Apista or Apistis. Spelled Ptericthys on pp. 63, 64, Plerichthys on p. 65; Pterichthys on pp. 180, 265, 442 (index). •Synonym of Apistus Cuvier 1829 -- (Lindberg & Krasyukova 1987:93 [ref. 15964], Mandrytsa 2001:258 [ref. 25636]).
