Ostracion Linnaeus [C.] 1758:330 Neut. Ostracion cubicus Linnaeus 1758. Type by subsequent designation. Earliest type designation not resolved; Bleeker 1865:27 [ref. 416] lists O. tetragonus as type, and Jordan & Gilbert 1883:853 [ref. 2476] list cubiceps as type. The gender of Ostracion is evidently neuter, but some authors apparently treat the name as masculine or feminine. Misspelled Ostracium by Billberg 1833:53 [ref. 34146]; see Kullander 2016:109 [ref. 34147]. •Valid as Ostracion Linnaeus 1758 -- (Tyler 1980:239 [ref. 4477], Arai 1983:203 [ref. 14249], Matsuura in Masuda et al. 1984:362 [ref. 6441], Smith 1986:892 [ref. 5712], Lindberg et al. 1997:103 [ref. 23547], Matsuura 2001:3949 [ref. 26317], Allen et al. 2006:1906 [ref. 29090], Matsuura 2014:17 [ref. 33576], Stewart & Roberts 2015:1728 [ref. 34322], Motomura et al. 2017:235 [ref. 35490], Fricke et al. 2018:383 [ref. 35805], Golani & Fricke 2018:180 [ref. 36273], Fricke et al. 2019:330 [ref. 36673]). Current status: Valid as Ostracion Linnaeus 1758. Ostraciidae.
