Gill 1864 removed the second species (leaving reticulatus), but that does not establish a type species (Art. 69.4). •Valid as Semicossyphus Günther 1861 -- (Richards & Leis 1984:544 [ref. 13668], Yamakawa in Masuda et al. 1984:204 [ref. 6441], Gomon 1997:822 [ref. 23083], Parenti & Randall 2000:38 [ref. 24943]). •Synonym of Bodianus Bloch 1790 -- (Santini et al. 2016:6 [ref. 39174]). Current status: Valid as Bodianus Bloch 1790. Labridae.
