Odontobutis Bleeker [P.] 1874:305 Masc. Eleotris obscura Temminck & Schlegel 1845. Type by original designation (also monotypic). Kottelat & Freyhof 2009:85 [ref. 30320] provide information on the derivation of the family name Odontobutidae. Gender is feminine according to Gill & Hoese 2011:67 [ref. 31121], but it is masculine according to Kottelat 2011:67 [ref. 31660].
