Robins & Bailey 1982:208 [ref. 6548] regard the genus as unavailable from Frey 1957:56, 375 [ref. 5455] and attribute it to Axelrod 1971. See also Kullander 1983 [ref. 14221] and Papiliochromis Kullander 1977 with same type. Dated to Meulengracht-Madsen 1968 by recent authors as Mikrogeophagus [but reference not given in Kullander in Reis et al. 2003:639 [ref. 27061]]. Isbrücker 1984:38 [ref. 30868] treats Microgeophagus Frey 1957 as the available name, with ramirezi as the type species.
