australis, Hemiramphus Steindachner [F.] 1866:471 [48] [Sitzungsberichte der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften. Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftliche Classe v. 53; ref. 4210] Port Jackson, New South Wales, Australia. Holotype (unique): NMW 5560. On p. 48 of separate. Corresponds to Hemiramphus trilineatus in abstract, Steindachner 1866:53 [ref. 20460]. The name Hemiramphus trilineatus Steindachner 1866 was used for this species in an abstract [ref. 20460] that apparently predates the name Hemiramphus australis Steindachner 1866 which appeared in the main paper [ref. 4210]. Because H. trilineatus has not been used, whereas H. australis is currently used for this commercially-important species, continued usage of H. australis is maintained. The name Hemiramphus australis might qualify as a nomen protectum under art. 23.9 of the Code. •Valid as Hyporhamphus australis (Steindachner 1866) -- (Collette 1974:61 [ref. 12930], Parin et al. 1980:93 [ref. 6895], Paxton et al. 1989:337 [ref. 12442], Kuiter 1993:64 [ref. 23929], Francis 1993:159 [ref. 25479], Kuiter 1997:52 [ref. 25488], Johnson 1999:724 [ref. 25471], Collette 2004:6 [ref. 27583], Paxton et al. 2006:735 [ref. 28994]).
