amboinensis, Cestracion Regan [C. T.] 1906:436 [Annals and Magazine of Natural History (Series 7) v. 18 (no. 108) (art. 70); ref. 15711] Ambon Island, Molucca Islands, Indonesia. Holotype (unique): BMNH 1867.11.28.183. •Synonym of Heterodontus zebra (Gray 1831) -- (Compagno 1984:164 [ref. 6474], Compagno 2001:48 [ref. 26323], Last el al. 2010:44 [ref. 32461], White et al. 2023:5 [ref. 40295]). bonaespei, Heterodontus Ogilby [J. D.] 1908:26 [Proceedings of the Royal Society of Queensland v. 21; ref. 3286] Table Bay, South Africa [locality questioned in literature]. Holotype (unique): QM I.1587 (jaws). Ogilby distinguished this species from Heterodontus philippi on the basis of the supposition that this species would not range as far west as S. Africa; appeared in Ogilby without distinguishing features and therefore unavailable. The "type" was redescribed by Reif 1973:165-167 [ref. 19152] but he did not treat the species as valid; this species name apparently was never published in an available way. •In the synonymy of Heterodontus portusjacksoni (Meyer 1793) -- (Reif 1973:165-167 [ref. 19152], Compagno 1984:160 [ref. 6474], Paxton et al. 1989:96 [ref. 12442], Last & Stevens 1994:115 [ref. 23873], Compagno 2001:42 [ref. 26323], Hoese & Gates 2006:60 [ref. 28997]). japonica, Cestracion philippi var. Duméril [A. H. A.] 1865:426 [Histoire naturelle des poissons ou ichthyologie générale v. 1; ref. 1150] Predates Cestracion japonicus Miklouho-Maclay & Macleay 1884; a petition to suppress this name made by Taylor 1971:107 apparently has not been acted on by the ICZN. Current usage favors continued use of authorship as Miklouho-Maclay & Macleay 1884. •Apparently an unneeded new name for Cestracion zebra Gray 1831. •Valid as Heterodontus japonicus (Duméril 1865) -- (Nakaya & Shirai in Masuda et al. 1984:3 [ref. 6441], Gubanov & Timoxin 1989:220 [ref. 36138], Cheng & Zhou 1997:16 [ref. 26385]). •Questionably a synonym of Heterodontus japonicus Miklouho-Maclay & Macleay 1884 or Heterodontus zebra (Gray 1831) -- (Compagno 1984:158 [ref. 6474], Compagno 2001:39, 48 [ref. 26323]). Holotype (unique): AMS B.68. Probably not technically available for use with this authorship, secondarily preoccupied by and apparently the same as Heterodontus japonicus [Cestracion philippi japonicus] (Duméril 1865) [following existing usage probably would allow continued dating to Miklouho Maclay & Macleay 1884]. •Valid as Heterodontus japonicus Miklouho-Maclay & Macleay 1884 -- (Compagno 1984:158 [ref. 6474] but with older japonicus Duméril questionably in synonymy). •Valid as Heterodontus japonicus Miklouho-Maclay & Macleay 1884 -- (Senou & Masuda 1998:2 [ref. 24388], Compagno 1999:476 [ref. 25589], Nakabo 2000:117 [ref. 25086], Compagno in Randall & Lim 2000:578 [ref. 25122], Nakabo 2002:117 [ref. 26001], Choi et al. 2003:49, 468 [ref. 26218], Compagno 2001:39 [ref. 26323], Yamashita et al. 2012:120 [ref. 32408], Ebert et al. 2013:302 [ref. 33045], Dyldin 2015:44 [ref. 34524], Weigmann 2016:6 [ref. 34211], Sonoyama et al. 2020:5 [ref. 37637], White et al. 2023:23 [ref. 40295]).
