Type information: Boeseman 1947:116 [ref. 12876]. Original genus should have been Lophotus. Based on description and illustration by Bürger [Heinrich Bürger, 1804 or 1806-1858, German biologist employed in the Dutch East Indies, studied the fauna and flora of Japan]; holotype was destroyed according to Temminck & Schlegel 1845:132 [ref. 4373]. •Synonym of Lophotus lacepede Giorna 1809 -- (Heemstra 1986:403 [ref. 5660]). •Valid as Lophotus capellei Temminck & Schlegel 1845 -- (Fujii in Masuda et al. 1984:116 [ref. 6441], Paulin et al. 1989:148 [ref. 24556], Paxton et al. 1989:398 [ref. 12442] as Lophotes capelli, Nakabo 2000:403 [ref. 25086], Shinohara et al. 2001:302 [ref. 25995], Nakabo 2002:403 [ref. 26001], Nelson et al. 2004:89 [ref. 27807], Craig et al. 2004:63 [ref. 28412], Mundy 2005:236 [ref. 28379], Paxton et al. 2006:539 [ref. 28995], Shinohara et al. 2011:40 [ref. 31715], Roberts 2012:55 [ref. 32187], Page et al. 2013:90 [ref. 32708], Shinohara et al. 2014:239 [ref. 33330], Duffy & Ahyong 2015:112 [ref. 36167], Stewart 2015:688 [ref. 34254], Kells et al. 2016:108 [ref. 35888], Angulo & López-Sánchez 2017:587 [ref. 35166]). Unneeded new name for and objective synonym of Lophotus lacepede Giorna 1809. Spelling cepedianus based on latinization of the vernacular name "Le Lophote Cepedien." •Synonym of Lophotus lacepedei [sic, should be lacepede] Giorna 1809 -- (Palmer 1973:334 [ref. 7195], Palmer in Whitehead et al. 1986:734 [ref. 13676], Quiniou & Quéro 1990:646 [ref. 17473]). Spelling cepedii based on latinization of the vernacular name "Le Lophote Cepedien." Goldfuss (1820) cited a paper by Cuvier 1813 [ref. 26409], and Cuvier used the name "Le Lophote Cepedien, Giorna." guntheri, Lophotes Johnston [R. M.] 1883:177 [Papers and Proceedings of the Royal Society of Tasmania 1882; ref. 18340] Near Emu Bay, northwestern coast of Tasmania, Australia. Holotype (unique): AMS B.5776 [ex TMH [Hobart Mus.]]. Also appeared in Johnston 1883:142 [ref. 18337]. Named for A. Günther of the BMNH (named after "the author of the Fishes of the British Museum"), so the name should be spelled guentheri. •Synonym of Lophotus capellei Temminck & Schlegel 1845 -- (Paxton et al. 1989:398 [ref. 12442]). •Apparently valid as Lophotus guentheri Johnston 1883 -- (Craig et al. 2004:63 [ref. 28412]). •Valid as Lophotus guentheri Johnston 1883 -- (Roberts 2012:55 [ref. 32187] as guntheri). [v. 16] (pt 1) (for 1805-1808); ref. 1808] No types known. Appeared as "Le Lophote-Lacepede" on p. 180, with genus as "Lophote-Lophotus" on p. 179; now accepted as valid by authors, although 2 other species are treated as vernacular names in the same work. Also appeared in Cuvier 1813 [ref. 26409] and Bosc 1817:186 as "Le Lophote cépédien." Also as cepedii Schinz 1822 and Goldfuss 1820, and cepedianus Cloquet 1823. All are apparently the same species which we call Lophotus lacepede Giorna 1809.
