varius, Squalus Seba [A.] 1759:105, Pl. 34 (1) [v. 3; ref. 18716] Date is from Holthuis 1969 [ref. 36115]. Lectotype selected by Klausewitz 1960:290 [ref. 21330] as SMF 3152 evidently invalid. Here regarded as a non-binominal work. Goto 2001:83 [ref. 25912] argues that the index is consistently binominal and that Squalus varius is thereby available (Art. 11.4.3 of the Code); however we conclude that the index is not consistently binominal. and that names proposed in this work are not available. This species is found under two names in current literature: S. varium (Seba 1759) and S. fasciatum (Hermann 1783), •Valid as Stegostoma varium (Seba 1759) -- (Dor 1984:4 [ref. 29757], Randall 1995:18 [ref. 22896], Gubanov & Timoxin 1989:221 [ref. 36138], Myers 1999:32 [ref. 23965], Compagno in Randall & Lim 2000:578 [ref. 25122], Goto 2001:83 [ref. 25912], Bonfil & Abdallah 2004:21 [ref. 27735]). •In the synonymy of Stegostoma fasciatum (Hermann 1783) -- (Compagno 1984:200 [ref. 6474], Paxton et al. 1989:92 [ref. 12442], Compagn1998:1262 [ref. 23785], Compagno 2001:186 [ref. 26323], Hoese & Gates 2006:125 [ref. 28997], Kottelat 2013:19 [ref. 32989], Eagderi et al. 2019:14 [ref. 37020]). •In the synonymy of Stegostoma tigrinum (Forster 1781) -- (Dahl et al. 2019:526 [ref. 36993]).
