Paralectotypes: ZMUC P6750 (dry skin). Type catalog: Nielsen 1974:72 [ref. 9588]. Authorship according to Fricke 2008:55 [ref. 30182]. Forsskål 1775 introduced the name sohal as a substitute for a possible to be named taxon, but in synonymy of Chaetodon lineatus Linnaeus 1758; name made available as Chaetodon sohar by Gmelin 1789:1268 [ref. 18139] (see Fricke 2008:55 [ref. 30182]); name sohal here retained due to prevailing usage. Spelled sohar by Lacepède 1802:556, 557 [ref. 4929]; sohab in Cuvier 1816:331 [ref. 993]. Lectotype selected by Klausewitz & Nielsen 1965:24 [ref. 20847]. Current status: Valid as Acanthurus sohal (Gmelin 1789). Acanthuridae. Distribution: Red Sea; northwestern Indian Ocean: Gulf of Aden, Socotra (Yemen), Gulf of Oman, Persian Gulf. One specimen recorded from Mediterranean Sea, probably an aquarium release. Habitat: marine.

Based on Rüpp. 16 -- which is Rüppell 1828:Pl. 16 [ref. 3843]. Originally spelled Rüppelii, corrected to rueppellii Kullander 2016:94 [ref. 34436]. •Synonym of Acanthurus sohal (Forsskål 1775) -- (Randall 1956:194 [ref. 12221]). •Synonym of Acanthurus sohal (Gmelin 1789).
