scaber, Chironectes Cuvier [G.] 1817:425, Pl. 16 [Mémoires du Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris v. 3; ref. 1015] Antilles and near Tonneliers Island, Mauritius, Mascarenes, southwestern Indian Ocean. Syntypes: MNHN (not found). Type catalog: Pietsch et al. 1987:148 [ref. 6339] with locality as Antilles, but the localities were four, including the Indian Ocean, so the specimen figured from the Antilles should be selected as the lectotype; no type specimens are extant. •Valid as Phrynelox scaber (Cuvier 1817) -- (Uyeno & Aizawa in Uyeno et al. 1983:247 [ref. 14275]). •Valid as Antennarius scaber (Cuvier 1817) -- (Robins & Ray 1986:88 [ref. 23100], Cervigón 1991:193 [ref. 24472], Aguilera 1998:47 [ref. 24221], Smith-Vaniz et al. 1999:161 [ref. 25013], Smith-Vaniz & Collette 2013:169 [ref. 32953]). •Synonym of Histrio histrio (Linnaeus 1758) -- (Fricke 1999:109 [ref. 24106]). •Synonym of Antennarius striatus (Shaw 1794) -- (Pietsch & Grobecker 1987:56 [ref. 20669], Pietsch 1990:483 [ref. 15577], Castro-Aguirre et al. 1999:175 [ref. 24550], Schmitter-Soto et al. 2000:153 [ref. 27754]). •Valid as Antennarius scaber (Cuvier 1817) -- (Smith-Vaniz & Jelks 2014:29 [ref. 33341] but needing a lectotype designation). Current status: Valid as Antennarius scaber (Cuvier 1817). Antennariidae. Distribution: Western Atlantic. Habitat: marine.
