Depth corrected in Erratum, Zootaxa 4105 (3), 2016:300. •Valid as Ateleopus edentatus Kaga 2016 -- (Kaga 2017:583 [ref. 35175]). Current status: Valid as Ateleopus edentatus Kaga 2016. Ateleopodidae. Distribution: Kyushu-Palau Ridge, western Pacific Ocean. Habitat: marine.

T.] 1921:414 [Annals and Magazine of Natural History (Series 9) v. 7 (no. 41); ref. 3672] 15-20 miles off Umvoti River, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, southwestern Indian Ocean, depth 120-130 fathoms. Syntypes: BMNH 1921.3.1.7-8 (2). •Valid as Ateleopus natalensis Regan 1921 -- (Smith 1986:405 [ref. 5712], Goren & Dor 1994:17 [ref. 25356], Manilo & Bogorodsky 2003:S97 [ref. 27377], Kaga et al. 2015:389 [ref. 33987], Kaga 2016:562 [ref. 34246]). •Synonym of Ateleopus japonicus Bleeker 1853 -- (Kaga 2017:583 [ref. 35175], Golani & Fricke 2018:33 [ref. 36273]). Current status: Synonym of Ateleopus japonicus Bleeker 1853. Ateleopodidae. Habitat: marine.

purpureus, Ateleopus Tanaka [S.] 1915:565 [Dobutsugaku Zasshi = Zoological Magazine Tokyo v. 27 (no. 325); ref. 4324] Off Minatomachi, near Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. Holotype (unique): ZUMT (lost). Species originally published in Japanese in above reference, later illustrated and described in more detail in English and Japanese in Tanaka 1915:396, Pl. 107 (fig. 328) [ref. 14937]. •Valid as Ateleopus purpureus Tanaka 1915 -- (Okamura in Okamura et al. 1982:115 [ref. 8256], Okamura in Okamura et al. 1985:439, 653 [ref. 8056], Nakabo 2000:347 [ref. 25086], Randall & Lim in Randall & Lim 2000:591 [ref. 25122], Shinohara et al. 2001:299 [ref. 25995], Chen 2002:274 [ref. 26587], Nakabo 2002:347 [ref. 26001], Shinohara et al. 2005:407 [ref. 28370], Shinohara et al. 2014:238 [ref. 33330]). •Synonym of Ateleopus japonicus Bleeker 1853 -- (Kaga et al. 2015:392 [ref. 33987], Kaga 2017:584 [ref. 35175]). schlegelii, Ateleopus van der Hoeven [J.] 1855:326 [Handboek der Dierkunde; ref. 2182] Nagasaki prefecture, Japan. Lectotype: RMNH 1410. Based on Temminck & Schlegel 1845: Pl. 112 (fig. 2). Lectotype selected by Kaga et al. 2015:390 [ref. 33987]. •Synonym of Ateleopus japonicus Bleeker 1853 -- (Kaga et al. 2015:392 [ref. 33987], Kaga 2017:584 [ref. 35175]). Other Tanaka material: ZUMT 8321-23 (3). •Valid as Ateleopus tanabensis Tanaka 1918 -- (Senou et al. 1993:2 [ref. 24327], Shinohara et al. 1996:163 [ref. 26605], Nakabo 2000:347 [ref. 25086], Shinohara et al. 2001:299 [ref. 25995], Nakabo 2002:347 [ref. 26001]). •Synonym of Ateleopus japonicus Bleeker 1853 -- (Kaga et al. 2015:392 [ref. 33987], Kaga 2017:584 [ref. 35175]).
