Syntypes: MNHN 0000-9912 (1) Bauchot's holotype, MNHN 0000-9928 (2) unknown locality. Type catalog: Bauchot 1963:118 [ref. 20718] as holotype and paratypes. Also appeared as Cuvier in Lesson 1831:176 [ref. 2776]. Two specimens mentioned in original description. •Synonym of Chaetodon lunula (Lacepède 1802) -- (Burgess 1978:566 [ref. 700], Allen 1980:159 [ref. 22764], Mundy 2005:395 [ref. 28379]). maculatus, Choetodon (Tetragonoptrus) Sauvage [H.-E.] (ex Liénard) 1891:259 [Histoire physique, naturelle et politique de Madagascar; ref. 14503] [Réunion (erroneous)] is Mauritius, Mascarenes, southwestern Indian Ocean. Holotype (unique): MNHN 0000-0902. Type catalog: Bauchot 1963:124-125 [ref. 20718]. Original genus should have been Chaetodon. Based on 'Chétodon tachete' of Liénard 1839:36 [ref. 17536] and Liénard 1840:297 [ref. 30337]; description quoted from Liénard. Objectively invalid; preoccupied by Tetragonopterus maculatus Bleeker (ex Liénard) 1875. Objectively invalid; Preoccupied by Chaetodon maculatus Bloch 1795. •In the synonymy of Chaetodon guttatissimus Bennett 1832 -- (Burgess 1978:722 [ref. 700], Allen 1980:158 [ref. 22764]). •Synonym of Chaetodon lunula (Lacepède 1802) -- (Fricke 1999:332 [ref. 24106]).
