Type catalog: Ibarra & Stewart 1987:41 [ref. 12367]. •Objective synonym of Ctenogobius fasciatus Gill 1858 -- (Robins & Lachner 1966:867 [ref. 22354]). •Valid as Gobionellus claytonii (Meek 1902) -- (González Bencomo et al. 1997:159 [ref. 24960], Castro-Aguirre et al. 1999:444 [ref. 24550] as claytoni, Miller 2006:397 [ref. 28615] as claytoni). •Valid as Ctenogobius claytonii (Meek 1902) -- (Murdy & Hoese 2003:1795 [ref. 27111] as claytoni, Kullander in Reis et al. 2003:658 [ref. 27061], Pezold 2004:273 [ref. 27685] as claytoni, Nelson et al. 2004:170 [ref. 27807], McEachran & Fechhelm 2005:688 [ref. 28815], Scharpf 2009:13 [ref. 30400], Van Tassell 2011:143 [ref. 31732], Page et al. 2013:176 [ref. 32708], Pezold 2022:89 [ref. 39351]). Distribution: North and Central America: from Rio Grande (Brownsville) south to Rio Coatzacoalcos and Usumacinta/Grijalva basin, Tabasco, Mexico. Habitat: freshwater, brackish, marine.

Paratypes: UMMZ 181796 (7, now 6, 1 c&s), 187725 (4), 187763 (1, c&s); USNM 118100 [ex USNM 62292] (1). Additional material: UMMZ. •Valid as Gobionellus atripinnis Gilbert & Randall 1979 -- (Lee et al. 1980:791 [ref. 22416], Espinosa Pérez et al. 1993:74 [ref. 22290], Castro-Aguirre et al. 1999:444 [ref. 24550], Musick 2000:18 [ref. 24959]). •Synonym of Ctenogobius claytoni [claytonii] (Meek 1902) -- (Pezold 2004:273 [ref. 27685], Scharpf 2009:13 [ref. 30400], Pezold 2022:89 [ref. 39351]). Current status: Synonym of Ctenogobius claytonii (Meek 1902). Gobiidae: Gobionellinae. Habitat: freshwater, brackish.
