Name dates from plate: Nov. 1851; text published Apr. 1852. •Valid as Hypoplectrus gummigutta (Poey 1851) -- (Cervigón 1992:435 [ref. 23827], Domeier 1994:104 [ref. 21359], Acero P. & Garzón-Ferreira 1994:13 [ref. 22090], Schmitter-Soto et al. 2000:157 [ref. 27754], Heemstra et al. 2003:1366 [ref. 27060], Aguilar-Perera & González-Salas 2010:377 [ref. 30878], Lobel 2011:11 [ref. 31606], Del Moral-Flores et al. 2012:4 [ref. 31860], Parenti & Randall 2020:118 [ref. 37354], Puebla et al. 2022:109 [ref. 39011]). Current status: Valid as Hypoplectrus gummigutta (Poey 1851). Serranidae. Distribution: Western Atlantic: Florida (U.S.A.) and Bahamas to Jamaica and Puerto Rico. Habitat: marine.

Paralectotypes: ANSP 13292 (1). Type catalog: Böhlke 1984:154 [ref. 13621] as holotype and paratype. Lectotype established by Fowler 1907:262 (fig. 4) [ref. 1376]. •Synonym of Hypoplectrus unicolor (Walbaum 1792) -- (authors). •Synonym of Hypoplectrus gummigutta (Poey 1851) -- (Domeier 1994:105 [ref. 21359], Parenti & Randall 2020:118 [ref. 37354], Puebla et al. 2022:110 [ref. 39011]). Current status: Synonym of Hypoplectrus gummigutta (Poey 1851). Serranidae. Habitat: marine.
