Additional non-type material: USNM 30233 (1), 31711 (3). Type catalog: Smith 1994:35 [ref. 21917]. Lectotype established in Jordan & Evermann 1900:3245 in caption to figure. Type catalog: Böhlke 1984:133 [ref. 13621]. •Synonym of Ophichthus cruentifer (Goode & Bean 1896) -- (McCosker 1977:81 [ref. 6836] with question, McCosker et al. 1989:384 [ref. 13288]). Current status: Synonym of Ophichthus cruentifer (Goode & Bean 1896). Ophichthidae: Ophichthinae. Habitat: marine.

conger, Leptocephalus Eigenmann [C. H.] 1902:37, Figs. 1-14 [Bulletin of the U. S. Fish Commission v. 21 [1901]; ref. 11102] Apparently not intended as a new species but as the doubtful name for the young of the conger eel, Conger conger (Linnaeus 1758) -- "The evidence that the eggs here described are those of Leptocephalus conger is circumstantial rather than positive." [Eddy Derijst email 11/8/08.]. This record can be deleted from further consideration. •In the synonymy of Ophichthus cruentifer (Goode & Bean 1896) -- (McCosker et al. 1989:384 [ref. 13288] who treated as an original description).
