Distribution: Western Atlantic: Florida (U.S.A.) south to northeastern Brazil; Indo-Pacific: East Africa, Seychelles, Madagascar and Mauritius (Mascarenes) east to Hawaiian Islands (U.S.A.), north to southern Japan, south to northern Australia, New Zealand region and Tonga; eastern Pacific: Pacific coast of Baja California Sur (Mexico) south to Peru, including Gulf of California (Mexico) and Galapagos Islands (Ecuador). Habitat: marine. similis, Oxyporhamphus micropterus Bruun [A. F.] 1935:17, Pl. 1 (fig. 1) [Dana Report No. 6; ref. 5130] Atlantic. Holotype: ZMUC 345 (apparently lost). Paratypes: ZMUC 3 (1), 13 (1), 229-233 (5), 529-531 (3), 959-963 (5), 1134 (1), P34223-27 (5). Type catalog: Nielsen 1974:54 [ref. 9588].
