Holotype: USNM 231719. Paratypes: ANSP 102736 (3), UF 209415 [ex UMML 9415] (1). Type catalog: Böhlke 1984:26 [ref. 13621]. •Valid as Opsanus astrifer Robins & Starck 1965 -- (Castro-Aguirre et al. 1999:172 [ref. 24550]). •Valid as Sanopus astrifer (Robins & Starck 1965) -- (Collette 1974:198 [ref. 5218], Collette 2001:14 [ref. 25398], Collette 2003:1040 [ref. 26981], Smith et al. 2003:13 [ref. 27621], Greenfield et al. 2008:677 [ref. 30046], Lobel & Lobel 2011:50 [ref. 31774], Cedillo-Reyna et al. 2020:[3] [ref. 37980], Martínez-Servín et al. 2023:111 [ref. 40726]). Current status: Valid as Sanopus astrifer (Robins & Starck 1965). Batrachoididae: Batrachoidinae. Distribution: Western Atlantic: Quintana Roo (Mexico) and Belize. Habitat: marine.
