Paralectotypes: USNM 26570 (1), 31427 (1). Lectotype established (as figured specimen) in caption to Pl. 264, p. 3286 in Jordan & Evermann 1900 [ref. 2446]. Current status: Valid as Sphoeroides nephelus (Goode & Bean 1882). Tetraodontidae. Distribution: Western Atlantic: including Gulf of Mexico. Habitat: brackish, marine.
