Based on multiple sources, including the 'Solenostomus cauda rotundata integerrima: seta nulla' of Gronow 1763:119 [ref. 1910], which was based on the 'Petiumbaba Brasiliensibus: Tobacco pipe-fish' of Willughby 1686: Pl. P8, fig. 1 [ref. 30164] [Brazil], the 'Acus chinensis maxima, corpore compresso' of Petiver 1702:Pl. 68, fig. 1 [ref. 30233] [China], the 'Peniop Pandjang' and 'Ikan Djoelong Djoelong' of Valentyn 1726:448, 502, figs. 323, 494 [ref. 30358] [Indonesia]. Distribution: Red Sea; Indo-Pacific: Eastern Cape and KwaZuluNatal (South Africa), East Africa, Socotra and Madagascar east to Clipperton Island (France) and Panama, north to southern Japan and Ogasawara Islands (Japan), Hawaiian Islands (U.S.A.) and Johnston Island, south to Western Australia at 31°52'S, Lord Howe Island (Australia), Kermadec Islands, Rapa and Easter Island (Chile). Habitat: marine.
