Distribution: Red Sea, Indo-Pacific: East Africa, South Africa, Socotra, Seychelles, Madagascar and western Mascarenes east to Panama, north to southern Japan, Ogasawara Islands and Hawaiian Islands, south to Rottnest Island (Western Australia), New Caledonia, Lord Howe Island and Rapa; Cocos Island (Costa Rica) and El Salvador in the eastern Pacific Habitat: brackish, marine.
