No. 1 (art. 2); ref. 14154] Tidal portion of Zwartkops River, near Port Elizabeth, and tidal rivers near East London, South Africa. Syntypes: SAM 10822-25 (1, 1, 1, 14). •Valid as Gilchristella aestuaria (Gilchrist 1913) -- (Poll et al. 1984:44 [ref. 6172], Whitehead 1985:168 [ref. 5141], Whitehead & Wongratana 1986:201 [ref. 6284], Skelton 1993:109 [ref. 24071], Poll & Gosse 1995:129 [ref. 24781], Skelton 2001:109 [ref. 27406], Stiassny 2002:67 [ref. 25890] but does not occur in Madagascar, Heemstra & Heemstra 2004:108 [ref. 28072], Fricke et al. 2018:54 [ref. 35805], Anderson 2022:159 [ref. 39690]). Current status: Valid as Gilchristella aestuaria (Gilchrist 1913). Ehiravidae. Distribution: Southeastern Atlantic and southwestern Indian Ocean: Namibia south to Cape of Good Hope (South Africa), then north to Mozambique, east to Madagascar. Habitat: freshwater, brackish.
