Paralectotypes: MNHN 0000-0070 (1), B-2578 [ex MNHN 0000-2597] (1), 0000-2583 (2), B-2597 (2), 0000-3369 (4), 0000-3943 (1), 0000-3944 (1, dry). Type catalog: Bertin & Estève 1948:23 [ref. 19574]. Appeared first as name only in Cuvier 1829:273 [ref. 995] and as Valenciennes in Cuvier 1842:217 [ref. 4980]. Type information: Almaça 1969:1120, 1132-1133 [ref. 20712] who allocated the type specimens among 3 species and named two lectotypes; Kottelat 1997:48 [ref. 22952] selected MNHN 1408 as lectotype, which is the specimen referred to Barbus meridionalis caninus by Almaça. •Permanently invalid; synonym and homonym of Barbus caninus Bonaparte 1839 -- (Bianco 1995:318 [ref. 21944], Bianco in Bogutskaya in Bănărescu & Bogutskaya 2003:130 [ref. 27353]). 1°Homonym. Current status: Synonym of Barbus caninus Bonaparte 1839. Cyprinidae: Barbinae. Habitat: freshwater.

petenyi, Barbus Heckel [J. J.] 1852:29 [Verhandlungen der Zoologisch-Botanischen Gesellschaft in Wien. v. 2; ref. 22971] Mures River, at Rastolita, Transylvania, Romania. Neotype: NMW 94602. Appeared first as name only and not available as petenyii in Heckel 1848:194 [ref. 18256]. Neotype designated validly in Kotlík et al. 2002:229, 237 [ref. 26484]. •Synonym of Barbus meridionalis Risso 1827, but a valid subspecies -- (Berg 1949:698 [ref. 20661], Lelek 1987:160 [ref. 22962]). •Probably a synonym of Barbus peloponnesius Valenciennes 1842 -- (Karakousis et al. 1993:232 [ref. 22335]). •Synonym of Barbus peloponnesius Valenciennes 1842 -- (Kottelat 1997:49 [ref. 22952], Economidis et al. in Bănărescu & Bogutskaya 2003:301 [ref. 27353] but as a valid subspecies). •Valid as Barbus petenyi Heckel 1852 -- (Michajlova 1989:23 [ref. 20062], Tsigenopoulos & Berrebi 2000:174 [ref. 25489], Bianco & Ketmaier 2001:200 [ref. 26728], Kotlík et al. 2002:229 [ref. 26484], Vassilev & Pehlivanov 2005:167 [ref. 28369] dated 1847, Kottelat & Freyhof 2007:128 [ref. 29996], Antal et al. 2016:187 [ref. 34094], Levin et al. 2019:42 [ref. 36643], Nagy et al. 2023:356 [ref. 40348]).
