Syntypes: MNHN B-1256 (2). Type catalog: Bertin & Estève 1950:534 [ref. 19576]. Apparently should have been arnei, appeared as aimei as a typographical error -- (Kuiter 2009:98 [ref. 30404]). Locality questioned by Lourie et al. 1999:165 [ref. 23933]. •Synonym of Hippocampus barbouri Jordan & Richardson 1908 -- (Lourie et al. 1999:75 [ref. 23993]). •In the synonymy of Hippocampus arnei Roule 1916 -- (Kuiter 2009:98 [ref. 30404]). •Synonym of Hippocampus spinosissimus Weber 1913 -- (Lourie et al. 1999:121 [ref. 23993] one type specimen only, Lourie et al. 2016:40 [ref. 34632]). Syntypes: (2) identified by Lourie et al. (1999:165) as 2 separate species. Hippocampus arnei is a corrected name for Hippocampus aimei Roule, changed due to a typographical error in the original description [ref. 15066]. •Valid as Hippocampus arnei Roule 1916 -- (Kuiter 2009:98 [ref. 30404]). •Not available, possible a joke played on Roule or on the collector -- (Kottelat 2013:305 [ref. 32989]). •In the synonymy of Hippocampus barbouri Jordan & Richardson 1908 -- (Lourie et al. 1999:75 [ref. 23993], Lourie et al. 2016:16 [ref. 34632] in part). •Synonym of Hippocampus spinosissimus Weber 1913 -- (Lourie et al. 2016:40 [ref. 34632] in part).
