Thalassoma (subgenus of Zyrichthys) Swainson [W.] 1839:172, 224 [The natural history and classification v. 2; ref. 4303] Neut. Scarus purpureus Forsskål 1775. Type by monotypy. Subgenus should have been spelled Xyrichtys. Type by subsequent designation. Dates to Cuvier 1814:87 as "...de nouveau nom générique de XYRICHTE (Xyrichlys [sic])." As Xirichthys in Cuvier 1829:262 [ref. 995] and Xyrichthys by authors. See Opinion 1799 (Appendix B in Eschmeyer et al. 1990 [ref. 26735]). Type designated by Jordan & Gilbert 1883, Bull. U.S. Natl.
