Holotype: CAS 219899. Paratypes: AMS I.4330-001 (1); BMNH 2004.6.18.1 (1); BPBM 6634-35 (1, 1), 39186 (2); CAS 219900 (3); FMNH 113713 (1); NSMT-P 68772 (1); SAIAB 74299 (1); USNM 378013 (1). Plus non-type material. •Valid as Apogon kautamea Greenfield & Randall 2004 -- (Greenfield 2007:365 [ref. 29402] as kauteamea [typo]). •Valid as Apogon kautamea Greenfield & Randall 2004 -- (Yoshida et al. 2010:33 [ref. 31255], Yoshida et al. 2010:33 [ref. 31255], Mabuchi et al. 2014:197 [ref. 33426], Kuiter & Kozawa 2019:39 [ref. 36965]). Current status: Valid as Apogon kautamea Greenfield & Randall 2004. Apogonidae: Apogoninae. Distribution: Southeastern Pacific: Easter Island endemic. Habitat: marine.
