Watersipora subtorquata (d'Orbigny, 1842)

The colonies of this bryozoan, or moss animal, are common on the floating docks of marinas in the middle section of San Francisco Bay. The edges of the colonies, which are shaped a little bit like masses of lettuce with upright leaves, are a brilliant orange. The color can be transferred to the fingertips upon handling.
