Stinging Trees and Wait-a-Whiles: Confessions of a Rainforest Biologist / William Laurance. Chicago, IL: University of Chicago Press, 2000.
In 1986, biologist William Laurance arrived in Australia to conduct fieldwork in the country's rapidly disappearing rainforest. Fifteen years later, he is giving all of us an opportunity to learn about his fieldwork, the ups and downs of research, volunteers, locals, and more. His non-traditional account of his time in the rainforest makes an entertaining and illuminating memoir of a scientist in action.

Photographs and suggested readings are included.

MULTIMEDIA/AUDIO VISUAL

Biodiv QH88 .D47 1991
Desert Under Siege. Oakland, CA: The Video Project, 1991.
An examination of the California desert and the challenges the habitat is currently facing. The California desert is a land of extremes, from the lows of Death Valley to 12,000 foot peaks, to snow and blistering heat. More than 2,000 different species can be found in this unique ecosystem.
More human impact is occurring in the desert every year, from recreation and off-roading to mining, housing development, solar and wind power plants, pipelines, and livestock grazing. All of the impact is having a negative effect on the desert, its plants and animals. The desert tortoise is now endangered, native plants are disappearing, and, with their disappearance, animals are losing shelter and food.
