The author, a professor
of physics and mathematics at Columbia University in New York City, writes of
the quest in physics of the unified field theory, a theory that unites the science
of the large, general relativity, to the science of the small, quantum mechanics.
A lot of hopes are pinned on superstring theory, and Greene deftly spins of
tale of the scientific story behind the quest for string theory and its current
state. Metaphor and analogy are used to describe the scientific for the non-scientist.
Notes are provided for each chapter. A glossary of scientific terms is included,
as well as references and further reading, and an index.

Scientists use echolocation
to create detailed maps of the ocean floor. When the maps are completed, some
researchers use them to look for thermal vents. 250 miles offshore in the Pacific
Ocean, researchers have been exploring hot springs using submersibles that fit
a researcher or two and lot of cameras and equipment. Temperatures of the vents,
biodiversity, new and different species, and systems are just some of the areas
being studied and examined. This 10 minute video takes you below the water line
to the vents themselves, and talks to scientists about their research.
