This volume attempts to identify and quantify the situtations
and numbers surrounding antibiotic use in agriculture. Through a complicated
formula with components gleaned from public records, the Scientists have determined
that the sheer volume of antibiotics, many of them also used in humans, is staggering.
This has created problems with drug resistant bacteria. Charts and graphs convey
the information in an easy to understand format, and an extensive set of references
and other appendices are also provided.

Originally
publishing in 1875, Joseph LeConte's account of his 37 day trip through Yosemite
is reprinted here just as it was in the original first edition. Among other
things, Joseph LeConte is remembered for being the Chair of the Geology Department
at the newly established University of California located in Berkeley. After
the end of the first year, he, his brother, also a professor, and 8 students
traveled to Yosemite to camp for the summer. LeConte describes the scenery,
the land, the wildlife, and his experiences and love with and for nature.

This volume is an attempt to put paid to some of those
"What the heck is this rock?" questions that geologists are constantly
asked. The authors have sketched broad outlines of the story, along with more
detailed information about certain features.
The books is divided into geologic sections that make sense to the layperson,
following the highway system in California to provide valuable reference. Maps,
photographs, a glossary, and a selected reference list are all included.

without thinking of trees. This book details 170 different trees found throughout

Each trees entry includes a drawing, the scientific name, and a description
of the tree. The numbers given to each entry correspond to numbers on the maps.
Color photographs, maps, a glossary, common names of trees, and much more are
included as appendices.

is a charming story of the design for the Forbidden City in China. The Emperor
is unhappy with all the designs so he threatens the trusted minister, who threatened
the Master Builder, who threatened the Carpenter and left it all on his shoulders,
but he couldn't work without a plan! His best friend gives him a cricket for
good luck, but the Carpenter knows without a design he'll be killed in the morning.
Everything ends happily, but how does the man, with help from the cricket, satisfy
the Emperor? Through text and wonderful color illustrations, the story comes
to life.

To comfort
her younger sister, and herself, while they're alone in their urban environment,
a girl uses her imagination to conjur images of Africa, just like in the stories
her great-grandmother told her long ago. The sirens outside become monkeys in
the trees, screaming brakes and a horn become elephants on the way to watering
hole, and the pounding and thumping across the hall are the calls of Faraway
Drums.
Although the situation is described and imaged realistically, the comforting
ending breaks the tension created through the powerful words and images.

this book deals with an issue that many people would think too complicated for
a children's book, the evolution of whales, the author has created a fabulous,
entertaining, and educational volume. The concept of whales changing from land
dwellers to the wondrous creatures they are today is handled with sensitivity
and scientific evidence linking fossils. The illustrations illuminate the text
and include drawings of the whale's ancestors.

study evaluated some of the most often used and recommended environmental education
materials for grades k-12. Recommendations were then made regarding the materials
and the future of environmental education in the classroom. The materials reviewed
are identified in an appendix at the end of the volume. 10 findings and 9 recommendations
were issued by the commission following the study. The findings include: Study
of the environment is an important subject for grades K-12, teachers are the
key to successful environmental education but materials frequently fail to provide
needed support, and more.
