Animal Tracks of Northern California / Ian Sheldon. Auburn, WA: Lone Pine Publishing, 1998.

What made those tracks? If you've ever said that to yourself while wandering around Northern California, this is the book for you. Mammal, bird, amphibian, and reptile tracks are illustrated. Information on the locations you're likely to see the tracks is given, along with an illustration of the actual animal.
An incredibly useful appendix is included, that presents easy to compare patterns and prints.

Pub QH366.2 .L375 2001
Evolution's Workshop: God and Science on the Galápagos Islands / Edward J. Larson. New York: Basic Books, 2001.

Collections from the Galapagos Islands helped to make the California Academy of Sciences what it is today. What is so special about these islands, however, that they inspired words from Herman Melville, "evilly enchanted ground," and the theories of Charles Darwin? The history of the islands and the research conducted there, large portions of it by the Academy, are brought to life by Larson, a Pulitzer Prize winning author.
Extensive notes and an index are included.

LifePlace: Bioregional Thought and Practice / Robert L. Thayer, Jr. Berkeley, CA: University of California Press, 2003.

Thayer examines the idea of a bioregion through personal experience and academic research. His 30 years spent in Sacramento Valley area provide counterpoint to his theories and facts about living closer to the earth.
Illustrations, a bibliography, and an index are included.
